Hey guys please check out this band and their links to music and social media will be under my interview with David from romance and rebellion!
Mandy: 1. What is the inspiration/meaning for your band name?
David: When I started the band I wanted the name to embody the duality the music was begin to exhibit. It had a beautiful sensitivity to it, as well as an unsettled youthful rebelliousness. I also was pretty inspired by fashion trends back then...I was probably looking at Crooks & Castles and wanted something similar in approach and sound. It wasn't all me (David) either. It was a collaborative effort, and the result of which is what you see today.
Mandy: Who are your biggest influences for your music?
David: Man...that's an intense question. On a deeper level, my musical influences are rooted in acts like 'The Beatles', Motown, Etta James, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Roy Orbison, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Kim Petras, Lennon Stella, The Strokes, The Black Keys, etc... the list could go on forever.
Though I think that influence is something that can be really heavily altered by stuff you're just exposed to in passing. In more recent history I've been on a real serious 90's R&B kick. It's heavily influenced my songwriting. The most shocking part is...I wasn't into R&B and POP music when I was coming up in the 90's...it was just sort of a happy accident.
Mandy: What is your favorite song you've written and the meaning of the song?
David: If you had asked me this question six months ago, I guarantee the answer would have been completely different. I know the guys are sick of playing it, but 'HEAVY' is definitely my favorite original composition.
As far as meaning, it's not a real hard song to comprehend the meaning of. HEAVY is about the weight of loving someone. "Heavy on my soul, is yours love, it's so HEAVY"...it's right there. Loving someone isn't always sunshine and rainbows...sometimes it's way more painful than pleasant, but you still stick around.
Mandy: What message would you like for your music to put out?
David: Well first and foremost, I think that I would love to convey a sense of openness and acceptance in talking about your emotions. I think that's always been important to me in our music. I would love for it to never be unacceptable to share your feelings.
Secondly, I would say that not everything means something. Sometimes the words just spill out like soft serve ice cream...and you've got just the right melodic accompaniment.
Thirdly, music (like all art) is subjective...give it your own damn meaning...we shouldn't have to do everything.
Mandy: What artist/band would you like to collaborate with?
David: It sucks to say it but collaborations are a lot less about creating amazing art, and much more about mutually beneficial business endeavors. Having said that, if I could collaborate with any LIVING artist currently on the scene...here's a wishlist:
BRUNO MARS
BILLIE EILISH
FINNEAS O'CONNELL
LENNON STELLA
YUNGBLOOD
DIPLO
MARK RONSON
KIM PETRAS
Mandy: What is the craziest thing that has happened while you were on tour?
David: A couple of years back we were in China doing a string of shows, one of which was in a large showroom at a convention center. After we had performed we were invited to dine with the owner of the Convention Center in a private viewing suite located about the show room floor. They brought in all of these amazing things for us to eat...most of which were really catered to an "AMERICAN" palette...but they also had a wide variety of local seafood as well (This included a whole platter of large head on prawn). As the night went on I would get up from the banquette table and wander around leaving my band mates to chat and feast. Every time I would return there would be more head on prawn piled on my plate. Sometimes they were left on the rim of my glass. I suspected it was a band mate, but chose not to be accusatory...cause ya know...it was all in good fun. Later on that evening we were invited to have some dessert at the home of a prominent business women. We walked back to her home and ate delicious gourmet iced cream while sitting in her home office. As I sat there with a room full of people I reached into my jacket pocket to check my cell phone and felt something poke me. It seemed that a rogue prawn had hitched a ride in my blazer pocket. To this day none of my band mates will take the blame...but we all kind of know who it was.
Mandy: During the covid-19 quarantine/lockdown are you working on any special projects?
David: Nothing out of the ordinary. Really just taking the opportunity to work on brand new Romance & Rebellion material. We're currently releasing material that we recorded late last year...so the material that is being written right now will be recorded for release during the summer this year. I'm really curious to see what kind of effect that's going to have on the sonic landscape.
Mandy: What message would you like to say to your fans/future fans?
David: Ok, ready...hey you! YEAH. I'm talking to you. This is David from Romance & Rebellion. By the time you get to read this message we will already be on our way to being one of the most well revered musical acts of all time. Isn't that amazing! So you were right all along. You are what research scientists like to call an "early adaptor". You're ahead of the curve. So I just wanted to take the opportunity to congratulate you on your awesomeness. Kudos! Now you must take this newly enlightened version of yourself and go out into the world spreading the word about the band you knew all along would be legendary. Pass along the awesomeness to those you know who are less musically "woke"...and praise be to R&R!!!!!!!!
