This is my interview with Jarrod from Below 7, another amazing band I found out about through a previous year of them playing blue ridge rock festival.( They are announced to play #blueridgerockfestival again this year!) Here's a little background on the band before my interview with Jarrod. After reading please check out their music and social media and give them a like!
BELOW 7 was founded by Jarrod, Eric, Lance, Scotty and Todd. It started as a way for the long-time friends to unwind and to share their love of music. What began as a simple cover band morphed into a completely unique beast when the band reunited two years ago. Some BELOW 7 members have been playing on and off together since high-school, and in their own bands as well but it wasn't until BELOW 7 was reborn in 2016 that everything just fell into place.
Mandy: Hey Jarrod thank you for taking the time to do this interview with me, how are you doing?
Jarrod: Doing great think you for asking. :) I hope you are as well.
Mandy: Below7 started out as a cover band, what made you you realize you wanted to do more than covers and make your own songs?
Jarrod: I was always in original bands before this one. I've always dreamed of singing on that big stage. At age 12 I sung at school and won a 4H competition and everyone went wild. I used to close my eyes as my parents drove anywhere and listen to the radio imagining I was I was on stage singing. The song sung by chicks got weird... ha ha Just kidding about that.
Mandy: Miss misery is one of my favorite songs by below7, what was the inspiration for that song?
Jarrod: Well the ups and downs of love and a relationship. We can be propetual of misery for those we love back and forth as it goes. No one is perfect, and let's be honest a relationship can be boring without a few ups and downs. I can handle the ride if it makes it way more fun, you know like "make up"... and being in misery can become addictive if over used.
Mandy: Speaking of inspiration, Who are the main bands/artists that influenced your music?
Jarrod: It would be different for each of us when you ask this and that's what melts and makes something new but for me personally...
Ozzy, Pantera, Godsmack, Metallica, Megadeth, Typo-O-Negative, Danzig, BLS, Nirvana, Lynard Skynyrd, Frank Sinatra, Dio, Beatles, Rick James, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin... there is so many and I listen to all kinds of stuff.
Mandy: If you could collaborate with any band/artist for a track, who would it be and why?
Jarrod: Ozzy, man that would be a dream come true before he leaves this life. Looked up to him since I was a kid. I mean in Black Sabbath they created metal by using the idea of making music like a scary movie.
Mandy: Below7 has played blue ridge rock festival before, how does it feel being announced to come back this year and perform along all these amazing bands being announced?
Jarrod: Ah, it's awesome... to get to meet and hangout with so many of the artist we listen to growing up and even now too, is insane. It's a learning experience, and a dream come true to play in front of what was estimated at around 30k people. I am that kid with his eyes closed imagining doing just this... except my eyes are open now.
Mandy: What is the wildest thing you have had happen while on stage?
Jarrod: Ah jeez, that is a tough one... lol So many different crazy things. Hmm, how about the time I drank too much and sang laying on the stage but didn't miss a beat... lol As we all grow, we learn. I learned my lesson and it wasn't too professional of me, but I laugh way to hard thinking of it.
Mandy: Every musician has a message they would like for their music to put out, what would you say is the message you want to put out through below7's music?
Jarrod: Enjoy life, stop finding reasons to hate each other. Look at live like a grand play that we should enjoy, don't be too hard on yourself and others.
Mandy: What would you like to say to your fans/future fans?
Jarrod: Don't give up! Reach for your dreams, don't be afraid of failure, fail then get up dust yourself off and keep trying. Also don't forget to have fun, let go, and get a little fucked up. ( Can I say fucked up? ) Sorry I cuss a lot. ;)
Mandy: Thanks again for doing this interview with me, hope to finally see you live at brrf 2020.
Jarrod: Hope you get to as well, hey don't be afraid to say hello if you do. You can hang with us we are one big family and way into respecting everyone. 🤘 P.s. Happy 420!
